Tooperang Free Range Eggs
You will find Tooperang Free Range Eggs at the Willunga Farmers Market every Saturday
Product line: free-range eggs
One thousand happy hens live just outside of Mt Compass, at Tooperang, home to Sue and Nick King. They are housed in 500-bird sheds, each one 0.4 hectares, and every morning Sue lets them out into their compound to wander around all day.
The shed is left open so the birds can return at leisure to eat and lay. They are then locked up at night, safe and warm.
Sue collects the eggs four times per day, with a daily total of between 600 and 800.
The eggs are hand washed in hot water via a solar hot water service installed on the chook sheds, body exfoliating gloves are used to clean the eggs, then the eggs are sanitised to food-grade standards, rinsed, drained, graded and packed.
Sue does the majority of work, with Nick assisting or doing maintenance when required. They are aiming for all green power, with solar to be expanded on and a wind generator coming on board in 2010.
The birds dine on Fleurieu stock feed, which is an organic, GM-free grain mix. The hens are also supplemented with fresh greens from the farm.
Tooperang Free Range Eggs are also sold direct to restaurants on the Fleurieu.
Farm gate sales and tours are available, with chook manure for sale at the gate.
