Herbivorous

You will find Herbivorous’ products at the Willunga Farmers Market every Saturday

Product line: herbs, dips, tussie mussies (herbal posies), salad greens, soups in winter and other bits and pieces as the seasons go on.

Herbivorous’ culinary herbs grow in the sunshine which makes them longer lasting, hardy, full of oils and with an incredibly intense flavour including basil varieties such as Thai, cinnamon and purple.

Owned and run by Michelle Vidau and Jack Walsh, Herbivorous’ farms are in Darlington and Hindmarsh Valley. Jill Stone works the Hindmarsh Valley farm for them, and also runs the Market stall every Saturday.

Additional produce includes snow pea sprouts and cresses (radish, broccoli and mustard), which are sold cut or as seedlings and unusual foods like tomatillos, cumquats and strawberry guavas.

Edible flowers (nasturtiums, rosebuds, violas, borage) are bunched up and sold with herbs as part of a tussie mussie, or posy.

Fresh produce is harvested and the dips made on Friday so everything is first-rate for Saturday’s market.

Dips include Jill’s famous sell-out guacamole, humus, tabouleh, beetroot, and coriander and green pea.

If not grown on the farm, then ingredients are sourced as local as they can be within season.

Fighting the winter chill, hearty soups include spicy lentil, winter vegie, or carrot and ginger.

“It’s beautiful to work with fresh produce,” says Michelle. “Customers know our products now, from the home cook to

larger restaurants, and we try to cater to everybody.”

Herbivorous products can also be found at the Adelaide Produce Markets, the Central Market, and various retailers and florists around Adelaide.
