Protea World

- Protea World market display
You will find Protea World at the Willunga Farmers Market on the 3rd Saturday of every month
Product range: cut flowers and pot plants
Protea World has over 6 hectares of colour all year round from its 15,000 bushes planted at Yundi on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Siblings Richard Gibson and Tina Bolton took over this family business in early 2009, from their parents who established it 18 years prior.
Along with hectares of colour, Protea World has a nursery with over 50,000 pots at various stages of growth. It takes about 6 months to produce a small pot plant, and another 12 months for a larger one.
Native to southern Africa protea belong to the Proteaceae family, to which Australian banksias also belong. Two other genera from southern Africa, Leucadendron and Leucospermum, are also commonly referred to as protea and belong to the same family. Protea World grows over 100 varieties of these species.
Proteas World’s cut flowers and pots are hardy. The most productive time for cut flowers is from early April to late November. Cut flowers last from 2 to 6 weeks in vases. The planted out pots are low-maintenance and drought-tolerant, ideal for South Australian gardens.
Leucadendron pots are popular in winter with their bright red and yellow flowers. Leucospermums flower in spring and the bushes are covered in yellow, orange or red pin cushion flowers. They all attract birds.
Protea World can also be found at the Stirling Market and the Goolwa Market every month.
