Richard Bennett is passionate about supplying locally-grown garlic to the community. This interest led him from the kitchen to the garden where he started Fleurieu Garlic in 2005 on his Hope Forest via Willunga farm.
Half a hectare of garlic is a lot of manual work for one person, but Richard harvests 20,000 bulbs annually which he supplies to local restaurants and Market customers.
Through Fleurieu Garlic, Richard grows about 30 of the 600 known cultigens of garlic, comprising of hard necks and soft necks – the neck being the stalk of the garlic bulb. Soft neck garlic is generally commonly available while hard necks are like a wild garlic, and have a stronger flavour.
Fleurieu Garlic’s main lines are purple, white and Creole garlics. Creole garlic is more drought-tolerant so Richard is moving towards specialising with this one.
Growing high-quality garlic is a long-term project as it takes a number of years to develop superior bulbs and expand on supply. Organic farming is also a long-term project at Fleurieu Garlic. The main approach is through improving soil condition by adding organic mulches and compost, a process which is achieving good results.
Fleurieu Garlic also grows organic rhubarb, which is sold at the Market, along with occasional seasonal vegetables fresh from the farm. Richard’s green rhubarb is turned into flavoursome chutney by his parents in their Hope Forest registered kitchen, along with a tasty zucchini pickle, both popular with Market regulars.
Fleurieu Garlic will take email orders for its garlic.
