Hillside Strawberries

You will find Hillside Strawberries at the Willunga Farmers Market every Saturday between mid October and end of May

Product line: strawberries

Hillside Strawberries’ 12 hectares is heaven for those in love with this lush sweet fruit. Located in Kuitpo, Hillside Strawberries 750,000 plants are managed by Brenton and Vanessa Sherry, with their three children – Adam 22, Megan 19 and Ryan 15.

When Hillside Strawberries first went to the Market they sold only half-price seconds. They sold out within the first hour. A quick call back to the farm had everyone collecting more strawberries; then they sold out again.

As their customer base grew Brenton and Vanessa increased their lines and now sell small and premium fruit too at their Market stall managed by their nephew-in-law, Leif.

They specialise in Albion, a soft, sweet and disease-resistant fruit, and trial different varieties on the farm. Results are then reported to the Strawberries Australia Board (Vanessa is a member), to work out which ones best suit particular climates.

Hillside Strawberries has a strong land management protocol and rest an area for 2 years before planting a cover crop which is then slashed in to feed the soil.

Bore and dam water is drip delivered to the plant, and natural predators are utilised on mites and thrips that attack the plants and flowers.

Brenton and Vanessa take pride in the quality of their fruit which is independently audited to make sure it is chemical safe with no residue.

They sell all over Australia and are the main supplier for Coles, but they also sell at the Adelaide Showground and Victor Harbor Farmers Markets. “It’s good to have that personal contact with customers,” says Vanessa.
