Blue Cottage Almonds

- Blue Cottage Almonds market stall
You will find Blue Cottage Almonds at the Willunga Farmers Market every Saturday except late Feb/early March when harvest is on.
Product line: Willunga almonds, cakes, biscuits and jams
Whether you eat them sweet, raw, roasted or salted, or in Blue Cottage Almonds’ delicious cakes, biscuits or jams, these almonds sell out every season. And the flavour of their products reflects the high standards used to grow and process these heritage almonds.
They are grown, harvested, processed and packed on Jude and Ian McBain’s four hectare orchard near Willunga.
The McBain family harvests the almonds late February/early March and a weekly cracking and processing roster is implemented to ensure the freshest possible produce is available for their stall at the Willunga Farmers Market.
Having been genetically mapped, the almonds grown by Blue Cottage Almonds were found to originate from European hardshell varieties rather than the smaller, Californian papershells, more commonly grown and sold in Australia.
The Johnstons are a brown-skinned, hard-shelled variety favoured by cooks and bakers. It is an excellent blanching almond. Somertons are smooth skinned with a creamy texture, delicious flavour and an all-round performer great for eating fresh or cooking. The Parkinson has a hard, almost white shell, which houses a sweet milky kernel. It is wonderful as a confectionery almond – sugared, cinnamon, etc but also great raw.
Blue Cottage Almonds are also sold around Australia by email.
